Time Management: Where to cut, where to focus, where to sleep.

Today you should have your homework ready… extra points if it’s legible. Were you surprised about how much time you spent a day. I know of one person who apparently had a 32 hour workday, very impressive, unfortunately she wouldn’t share her flux capacitor.

To continue we have to tell you about science, just a bit. I know… no one likes science. That said you need to look up the Pareto Principle. That’s the technical name in case you would like to look it up. For those of us like myself who like to be spoon fed info we are just going to go with the 80:20 rule. Simply put 80% of the work you do is completely unfocused and will only manage to net you 20% positive results. Flip that over and if you can manage to give 20% focused effort you will bring forth a whopping 80% results. Basically work smarter not harder. This principle is where this comes from. Its fortune cookie wisdom based on scientific theory.

What this means for you is simple. You already started your plan, you wrote down how your day is spent so you have moved the focused percentage just a bit in your favor. That’s a good start now with some slight tweaking and alterations you can move that percentage even further.

Here are a few ideas to implement today:

Go through that list you made, take out half of the Facebook time that’s all you get. If you have to get a small alarm clock do so, set it and follow it. I know we talk about using it for networking, but everyone knows half your time is spent looking at pictures and playing games.

Next go through your list and prioritize things in order of actual importance. Not in order of what you want to do, rather what has to be done. This is more important for work of course; you can play around with it at home. Anything really low on your priority list, try to get rid of it, less stuff equals more time. More time for… sleep ZzzzzzZzzzzz.

Final thing, take that extra bit of time you got and use it for sleeping. I’m not kidding. Most humans need 6-8 hours of sleep. You know how much sleep it takes to make you at your best, be sure to get it. Being well rested helps you focus, being focused helps you achieve results. In the long run, you will save time and feel better. Hard to argue it. So tonight get some more sleep, and we will return to this tomorrow with specific things you can do to manage your time.
