Tags in videos are a lot different than keywords. There is a specific way to utilize tags in the best possible way. Tags are words and phrases included in your YouTube video descriptions. It helps organize them by telling YouTube what your videos are about. Tags assist in ranking videos. Additionally they connect other videos together. You might have a playlist or series of videos you want to be associated with. Or show up on the side bar associated with like-minded videos of others.

Descriptions of your videos give you an opportunity to plus size keywords for better S.E.O. What you write below a video could potentially impact a greater return on placement, engagement, and growth. Video description sections are massive real estate for information, links, calls to action, and of course enhancing keyword strength. But what is the information you should have in there?

I want to focus on video descriptions first. The first few lines of your descriptions are generally the most important. Start your description off with keywords. The very top of your video needs to have the full description of what your video is about. To rank, you want to keep your keyword phrase, or utilize your video title here. And fill your description with keywords that could help elevate the subject matter in the video.

Now you want to get into the call to actions. You can create YouTube Subscribe links fairly easy. You would place that directly below your first description entry. Take your YouTube URL and add [?sub_confirmation=1] after it. This will make it so when people click the link it will automatically prompt them to subscribe. You want to give people as many options as possible to subscribe to your channel when and where you can.

To influence viewership you have a chance to place links to videos in this section. Keep the videos inline with what your video is about. Keep it simple and short. Place three to four videos and three to four playlists. I would also recommend placing links to the same niche subject as the video, BUT, use “subscriber magnets.” These are videos, and or playlists, with high subscribe conversion rates.

At this point you want to add a few standards. If you have affiliate links to send people, throw those in. Make sure the affiliate links stick with what your video subject is about. Take this time to redirect people to your website, and social media links. I personally like linking people to the main website. This allows them to make an emotional choice to click. If they choose to click to your website, now they are more likely to go to your social media pages.

Tagging a video starts off fairly easy. You want to attach SPECIFIC TAGS first. These are keywords that are specific to the content in your video. The topic of that specific video needs to be highlighted in the tags. Often times when you are typing words, YouTube will give you suggestions of keywords and phrases. If these apply to your content you should use them, however you should also add generic versions of those same tags.

Following those are COMPOUND TAGS. These are tags with two or more words used. Many people will tag the title of their video. If you choose to do this make sure you leave out propositions (and, as, or, etc) because YouTube ignores these words and you only have 500 characters for your tags. You should try to use all 500 characters allowed, but you don’t want to waste them on words that will be ignored.

Round out your list with GENERIC TAGS. These are tags that have to do with the overall topic of your video. An example of this may be “DIY”, “How to”, or “vlog.” These words are probably going to be tags that you use in all of your videos. It is important to have a group of constant tags that are generic throughout your channel. Mixing up your tags with these generic tag options help widen your connection to certain searches.

You want to arrangement tags by the most important relevant keywords first. YouTube places weight on the first tag. When placing tags you should try and keep a certain level of tag consistency for your channel’s sake. This ensures consistency so you can create default tags on every video in your channel. Have these multiple keywords throughout your whole channel. Doing this will give you a higher chance of showing up in the suggested video column to the right.

Next, brainstorm words others might search for to find a video like yours. Think like an audience. Use as many keywords as possible to fill up your space. Once you do your research now look into competitor’s tags. Your goal is to find strong tags for the start of your list. Followed up by medium strength tags. You should do this since tagged videos with high traffic tags will get lost in the fray. Allow yourself a chance to be seen through diversifying your tags with strong and medium strength tags.
